Electronic shelf labels (ESLs) are digital wireless display systems used in retail mass and grocery stores to show product prices and other dynamic content. Although relatively new in North America, ESLs are helping to revolutionize the retail experience. Here are a few ways they're making an impact on shopper engagement in-store:
Real-Time Accuracy:
Shoppers can trust the prices they see on shelves, as ESLs are updated instantly and accurately, reducing the frustration of price discrepancies at checkout.
Enhanced Product Information:
ESLs can display dynamic content, such as detail product descriptions, nutritional information, and promotions, helping shoppers making more informed purchasing decisions.
Interactive Features:
Some ESLs offer interactive elements, such as QR codes, allowing shoppers to quickly access additional product information on their mobile devices.
Personalized Promotions:
Retailers can tailor offers and promotions right down to the local store level, providing offers more relevant and attractive to an individual store’s customer base.
Sustainability:
ESLs reduce paper waste, aligning with the growing consumer preference for environmentally friendly shopping practices.
Carrefour Leading the Way
In Europe, Carrefour is leading the way with use of ESLs in partnership with Pricer. A recent poll by Pricer, showed 83% of UK shoppers will now compare prices at shelf-edge, due to soaring food prices. As Pricer Country Manager Peter Ward stated:
“Giving consumers access to real-time pricing and promotions information, served digitally to them at the shelf-edge, not only helps customers feel supported in their increasingly price conscious buying missions, but can also help retailers showcase the efforts they are going to in order to keep prices low and support shoppers by offering the best prices or deals across their sales channels”.
Overall, electronic l shelf labels significantly enhance the shopping experience by ensuring price accuracy, providing valuable information, and offering personalized promotions—all while supporting sustainability efforts. This modern approach makes shopping more efficient, engaging, and enjoyable.
